International Blue Flag Status for Whitehaven Marina

The Blue Flag is an international recognition of high standards with respect to the provision and quality of Marina services, facilities, information and environmental issues.

Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners have strived to reach this level of quality over recent years with continued developments still ongoing to further enhance the Harbour. The Blue Flag is an exclusive eco-label awarded to more than 2800 beaches and marinas in 23 countries across Europe and South Africa in 2003. 12 UK marinas achieved International Blue Flag Status in 2003 including Whitehaven Marina. Whitehaven Marina is actively attempting to achieve the award for 2004.

The Blue Flag Campaign includes environmental education and information for the public, decision makers and tourism operators, and is owned and run by the independent non-profit organisation, Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). This non-governmental organisation consists of member organisations representing around 30 countries in Europe, Africa and America.

Applications are made annually whereby each applicant is scrutinised and inspected before a decision is made. We have applied again, and so will be notified in June. Successful Marinas may fly the Blue Flag on site and promote the award, Whitehaven Marina's is situated on the Bulwalk Quay. Further information: http://www.blueflag.org/
